Abstract [en]

The quest for user friendly systems that fit into an organizational reality and yet stay competitive on a very crowded marketplace is a challenge. This report covers the setup of an eHealth project that faces challenges in all these areas, not least in the intersections between them. We discuss these challenges in the context of a research and development project, FRONT-VL, which is in its start-up phase, giving samples of problems and opportunities. The purpose of the paper is to problematize eHealth development and to provide initial insight into the planning and conduct of such projects.

Abstract [en]

Purpose – This paper investigates risk reduction strategies in online shopping through the perspective of buyer's trust.

Design/methodology/approach – An explanatory research approach is adopted in order to identify cause-and-effect relationships between e-quality and customers' loyalty, satisfaction and trust. This approach is accomplished through field research, which is based on a structured questionnaire that utilizes the E-S-QUAL tool, which is a multiple-item general scale for measuring electronic service quality. The sample is consisted of 92 e-buyers (consumers).

Findings – The field research revealed that three e-quality dimensions, namely ease of use, customization and assurance, e-scape and responsiveness have significant positive effects on e-loyalty and e-satisfaction. Regarding e-trust, only customization and assurance exerts a significant positive effect.

Research limitations/implications – The field research provides in depth understanding of relationships among e-loyalty, e-satisfaction, and e-trust. The majority of the respondents are young people living in Athens, Greece, highly educated with a relative low monthly income.

Originality/value – This study investigates how trust is affecting the consumers' engagement to e-commerce, suggesting the appropriate security that should be taken in order to mitigate perceived risks. Reviewing security measures can help reduce risks of an e-company, and simultaneously enforce the level of trust and customers intentions to buy.

Abstract [en]

Purpose – This paper investigates the association of Lack of Awareness and human factors, and the association of Lack of Awareness and significant attacks that threat computer security in Higher Education.

Design/methodology/approach – Five human factors and nine attacks are considered, in order to investigate their relationship. A field research is conducted on Greek employees in Higher Education in order to identify the human factors that affect information security. The sample is consisted of 103 employees that use computers at work. Pearson correlation analysis between Lack of Awareness and nine (9) computer security risks is performed.

Findings – Examining the association of Lack of Awareness with these attacks that threat the security of computers, all nine factors of important attacks exert significant and positive effect, apart from Phishing. Considering the relationship of Lack of Awareness to human factors, all five human factors used are significantly and positively correlated with Lack of Awareness. Moreover, all nine important attacks, apart from one, exert a significant and positive effect.

Research limitations/implications – The paper extends understanding of the relationship of the human factors, the Lack of Awareness, and information security. The study has focused on employees of the Technological Educational Institute (TEI) of Athens, namely teachers, administrators, and working post-graduate students.

Originality/value – The paper has used weighted factors based on data collection in Higher Education to calculate a global index for Lack of Awareness, as the result of the weighted aggregation of nine (9) risks, and extends the analysis performed in the literature to evaluate the effectiveness of Security Awareness in Computer Risk Management.

There is a need to adopt a situated design perspective in designing computer-based tools that support knowledge work to better understand what it means for users, developers, and stakeholders to approach and capture the tacit knowing within the work context. The design situation is characterized as explorative and iteratively interpreted, a pursuit of the vision of the future system guided by local circumstances. Formal engineering methods, reducing development work to engineering endeavors based on a rationalistic perspective, are not sufficient. The situated design perspective is presented as a conceptual model of the design practice, highlighting its constituent worlds, processes, and relations. The model depicts designing as an explorative and sense-making process, navigating between what is wanted or envisioned and what may be negotiated and discovered. It emphasizes the importance of the artifact being designed as a means to capture, communicate, and discover what is possible in the work context. The model makes clear that the design process is highly situated, that it cannot take place outside the work context because of interdependent relationships. It is designing within the living work context, not design for an objectified one.

Abstract [en]

Abstract Several studies have shown that consumers perceive higher risks buying online than in conventional way. Perceived risks affect all purchase decisions and consumers' behavior, by deterring them to buy. These risks come from the lack of trust of shoppers toward online vendors' credibility. The main field of research in this paper is to investigate how trust is affecting the consumers engagement to e-commerce, in order to conclude in which security measures should be taken in order to mitigate perceived risks. A framework for a field research is also given in order to identify the causal relationships between electronic service quality and e-loyalty, e-satisfaction and e-trust.

Abstract [en]

It is widely acknowledged that employees of an organization are often a weak link in the protection of its information assets. Information security has not been given enough attention in the literature in terms of the human factor effect; researchers have called for more examination in this area. Human factors play a significant role in computer security. In this paper, we focus on the relationship of the human factor on information security presenting the human weaknesses that may lead to unintentional harm to the organization and discuss how information security awareness can be a major tool in overcoming these weaknesses. A framework for a field research is also presented in order to identify the human factors and the major attacks that threat computer security.

Abstract [en]

The designing of computer-based artifacts to support knowledge work is far from a straightforward rational process. Characteristics of knowledge work have a bearing upon how developers (or designers), together with users, come to approach and capture the rich and tacit knowing of the practice. As all knowledge work is about the production of knowledge, transforming it, so is the design practice for developing artifacts to occupy space within that same practice. There is a need for providing a conceptual language to better reflect the nature of this design work that goes beyond those dressed in the managerial (or rational) language of planned activities and deliverables. Towards this end a conceptual frame is presented that makes visible several important aspects of the design practice. The frame brings together both nature of design work and characteristics of knowledge work to extend the frame of knowledge in user-developer communication of Kensing and Munk-Madsen. Thereby, providing a means to focus attention and dress debate on what situated designing is. By using explicit concepts, such as types knowledge domains embedded in the design situation, the transitional paths between them, and design engagements, it arms practitioners with specific linguistic constructs to direct attention and efforts in planning and organizing development undertakings.

Abstract [en]

The aim of the thesis is twofold. First, a need is exposed for adopting a situated design perspective in designing computer-based tools that support knowledge work. Second, an examination is made of what this perspective may reveal concerning the nature of processes and relations within the design situation. This is done to understand better what it means for users and developers, as well as other stakeholders, to approach and capture the tacit knowing within the work context.

The argument for adopting a situated design perspective is based on experience drawn from development projects, as well as literature reviews. In these projects, the design situations encountered are best characterized as explorative and iteratively interpreted. Here, approaching and understanding the work context, together with the users, has at best been a pursuit of the vision of the future system guided by local circumstances, and where the users had difficulties in expressing and understanding what it is they want and how they want it. This implies that formal engineering methods, where the development work is reduced to an engineering endeavor based on a rationalistic perspective, are not sufficient.

The situated design perspective is presented in this thesis as a conceptual model of the design practice, highlighting its constituent worlds, processes, and relations. The model depicts designing as an explorative and sense-making process, navigating between what is wanted or envisioned and what may be negotiated and discovered. In general, all the elements involved in a production process, such as tools, machinery, methods, competence and working environment are exposed to changes. Thus, to maintain and improve company profitability and competitiveness, it is necessary to reduce losses through maintaining and improving the quality of the elements involved in the production process. Therefore, the maintenance strategy applied should be dynamic to be suited for all these changes cost-effectively. In producing companies, the accuracy of maintenance decisions is essential for reducing economic losses generated due to unnecessary stoppages in companies of intensive capital investment where stoppage time is expensive, especially in paper and pulp mills, refineries, power stations and engineering manufacturing. Therefore, it is necessary for maintenance and production managers to have a system providing the data required to achieve dynamic and cost-effective maintenance decisions.

In this chapter, the new maintenance decision support system (MDSS) for achieving dynamic and cost-effective maintenance decisions developed in Chapter 12 is tested and discussed. The developed system is MIMOSA compatible, consists of three toolsets and five software modules for performing six services to achieve different objectives, e.g.:

  1. higher accuracy of maintenance decisions;

  2. selection of the most cost-effective maintenance solutions;

  3. identification and prioritisation of problem areas and assessment of losses in production time; and

  4. mapping, follow up and assessment of maintenance cost-effectiveness (maintenance savings and profit) to achieve continuous and cost effective improvement.

Abstract [en]

This paper investigates driving forces and hinders for collaborative knowledge creation, and the influence of IT-support technologies. We look at the use of wikis in learning in situation and the problems and possibilities for support of learning processes. The focus is on organizational learning, however not many reports are to be found on this topic. To gain some initiating insight into how to support organizational learning we look at some evidence from education. An overview from past studies and some evidence from our own use of wikis are used as a base for suggestion for the possibilities of wikis. Some important problems to be addressed before launching a corporate wiki include are discussed.
