Abstract [en]

The aim of this case study is to show how migrant1 parents perceive the signi- ficance of participating in their children’s schooling through homework in general and translanguaging homework in particular, and how their perceptions and attitudes are expressed linguistically. The study builds on semi-structured inter- views which are examined through qualitative content analysis and appraisal analysis. The results show that participation can be perceived both as a possibility and as a challenge. The challenges were mostly due to linguistic barriers, but it appeared that the parents could change these challenges into possibilities, that were an advantage for their participation in their children’s schooling. The prerequisites for the parents’ possibilities to participate in translanguaging homework appear to depend on the teachers’ receptiveness to the linguistic situations in the families.

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this case study is to examine if and how working with homework in general and translanguaging homework (TLH) in particular can support collaboration between home and school. Our aim is also to find out if TLH provides the ground for teachers and parents of migrant background to feel and act as epistemic subjects, i.e., as participants whose knowledge is given credibility. Prior research has shown the importance of collaboration between home and school. However, for migrant parents, collaboration has often proved to be problematic and unequal, due to for example language barriers. Research has shown that translanguaging bridges such problems. How the implementation of translanguaging is appreciated by parents and teachers has scarcely been researched. Neither has collaboration through TLH been studied regarding how they perceive each other as epistemic subjects. In this study, thematic content analysis has been applied on interview data with parents and teachers. The epistemic (in)justice framework has then been used to discuss the found themes in their answers. The findings show that teachers’ and parents’ perceptions of working with TLH differs. Some parents perceive that TLH enhances their chances to collaborate with school as epistemic subjects. Conversely, TLH may obscure other parents’ possibilities to collaborate, thus creating epistemic injustice. Lastly, TLH might be ignored altogether by some parents, thus neither enhancing collaboration nor creating epistemic justice. Concludingly, in order for TLH to work, reciprocal sensitive listening to each other, from both the teachers’ and the parents’ side, is important, and teachers need to be aware of the students’ family situation regarding their language choices and language use.

Abstract [en]

The present volume draws on translanguaging and disciplinary language from seven studies that link to international contexts of language use, namely, to the countries of Cyprus, Estonia, Pakistan and Sweden. It spans different home environments as well as a variety of school stages from pre-school to university andadult education. The different perspectives relate, for example, to mothers' concern to maintain their children's mother tongue, teachers' concern to implement and apply translanguaging and students' concern about multilingual education. The articles reflect contemporary society with its distinguishing features of globalization and multiculturalism.

Abstract [sv]

I dessa onormala tider fortsätter universitetet oförtrutet sitt uppdrag, att tillhandahålla meningsfull utbildning samt kritisk och innovativ forskning. Linnéuniversitetet har skilt sig från flera andra lärosäten genom att under Coronapandemin fortfa rande erbjuda viss campusundervisning. Hur detta kommer att utvecklas återstår att se; i takt med att fler aktiviteter sker på nätet har nya uppslagsrika lösningar tagits fram för att garantera studenterna en god kunskapsinhämtning och meningsfull kommunikation.

Kommunikation är också temat för det första av de bägge teman som inryms i detta nummer av HumaNetten . Temat ”Translanguaging and Disciplinary Language in the Individual, at School and in Society” har redigerats av Gudrun Svensson, Fakulteten för konst och humaniora och Ann- Christin Torpsten, Fakulteten för samhällsvetenskaper, Linnéuniversitetet. Transspråkande handlar om användningen av språket i flerspråkiga kontexter och de sju bidragen behandlar både empiriska och mer teoretiska aspekter av det ta. Temat förklaras närmare av de bägge gästredaktörerna i ett separat förord.

Det andra temat i föreliggande nummer har en mer lokal prägel. Piia Posti och Peter Forsgren, litteraturvetare vid Linnéuniversitetet har redigerat en samling betraktelser över litteratur i Småland. Frågor som ställs här är om det verkligen finns en distinkt ’småländsk’ litteratur och vad som i så fall har betingat dess utformning. Olika aspekter av dessa frågor lyfts fram i inte mindre än tretton essäer om både kända och något mindre bekanta litterära namn. Även här förklaras temat i större detalj í ett förord av de bägge gästredaktörerna.

I övrigt bjuder detta nummer på artiklar om så skilda teman som äktenskap i den muslimska världen, Vi på Saltkråkan och digitala redskap för språkinlärning. Vi tackar alla bidragsgivare som har gjort detta julnummer av HumaNetten till en mångsidig och uppslagsrik läsupplevelse.

Abstract [en]

The article, Möjligheter och utmaningar – lärares uppfattningar omflerspråkighet och transspråkande [Possibilities and challenges – teachers’perceptions of multilingualism and translanguaging] is  based on interviews and focuses on the implementation of translanguagingin a primary and intermediate school. The article proceeds from a longitudinal study with phenomenographic analyses (Marton & Svensson 1978) and points out the teachers’ perceptions that they found it advantageous to use translanguaging strategies in their multilingual classrooms, but also encountered difficulties in implementing an until then unknown educational paradigm in a monolingual environment. The study reveals that the implementation through time resulted in overall changes of attitudes towards the use of multilingual resources in education. During the implementation time the search for support and increase of knowledge created progressive collaborative teacher work inside the school and later on a further distribution of the translanguaging paradigm to other schools.
