Abstract [en]

The focus on my short introduction will be on the specific Nordic sense of exploitation during the 80s, which differ quit a lot from its American counterpart. Nordic exploitation could be conceptualized as filmmaking aimed against normative ideas of what constituted “film art” (financially and culturally supported by the Nordic Film Institutes), but also aimed against the prevailing notion of unlawful film violence for the sake of entertainment. This will be exemplified by Swedish film factotum and outcast, Mats Helge Olsson, who managed a virtual film factory in the countryside outside of Lidköping, far from the fashionable film center in Stockholm.

Abstract [en]

This article makes use of records in the archive of Sweden’s National Board of Film Censorship for a discussion of the censorship of visual representations of sex and violence in films by women directors during the 1920s. From the perspective that Swedish film censorship was utilized to educate and control Swedish cinema audiences, not least concerning taste, the question is posed: how did gender and nationality play a role in the assessment of taste? Focusing on three case studies, namely Karin Swanström’s Kalle Utter (1925), Dorothy Arzner’s Manhattan Cocktail (1928) and Olga Preobrazhenskaya’s The Women of Ryazan (1927) and comparing censorship records with reviews in the daily press, the article demonstrates how nation played a role in the assessment of taste and the decisions to cut these films. The analyses also reveal that the censoring of sexual violence had a tendency to diminish acts such as rape and forced kissing in a narrative as well as on a moral level.

Abstract [en]

The 1994 genocide against the Tutsis in Rwanda have spawned over 150 feature films and feature-length documentaries, making it into the second most audio-visually recreated genocide after the Holocaust. Within this large body of historical films a subgenre have emerged with a distinctive Christian theme. This article explores these Christian themed documentary films about the Rwandan genocide and positions them within a film historical perspective as well as analyzes and contextualizes them as a subgenre of films about the Rwandan genocide within films about genocide in general. Of note are how memory and historiography are used, and the links between these films’ educational, religious, and commercial elements.
