Abstract [en]

This article provides a methodologically oriented case study of the application of Large Language Models (LLMs) in Islamic studies. Its empirical focus is on 20 thousand e-fatwas from the website askimam.org. The study demonstrates how LLMs, here represented by the open-source tool BERTopic, can significantly augment a process of distant reading. The research focuses on a topic modelling revealing insights into recurring concerns evident from the questions posed by believers in fatwas. It also provides an example of further, post-topic modelling and analysis focusing on thematic variations across questions from different geographical regions. The article argues for the potential of LLMs to reshape research methodologies, offering faster, more comprehensive, and nuanced analyses of large datasets.

Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

In the present article, the authors argue that the study of Salafism as a contemporary Islamic new religious movement could benefit from an analytical perspective separating fundamentalism into the modes of inferentialism and deferentialism. The basics of these concepts are outlined and discussed in relation to different aspects of contemporary Salafism as well as in relation to previous tendencies in Islamic history. As a case study, the authors employ the concept in an analysis of a contemporary Swedish Salafi discourse on the 'wiping of the (leather) socks' in the context of ritual purity. The authors argue that the concept of 'deferential fundamentalism' has a potential in the study of Salafism in that it allows for comparative analysis, both cross-religiously and diachronically, in contextualising Salafism historically. It also allows for an analysis of Salafi thought and practice in relation to theories of how human beings in general process social information.

Abstract [is]

This article analyses clusters of Muslim responses to the COVID-19 pandemic in a theoretical framework provided by the cognitive science of religion. The responses include theological reflections on the origin, nature, and religious significance of the disease, religious justifications for restrictions on communal worship, apologetics in the light of COVID-19, and how aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic relate to issues of purity, impurity, and contagion. This article places the responses in a wider theoretical context that contributes to explaining their emergence as cultural representations, and, as a consequence, may promote further comparative research into responses to the COVID-19 pandemic in other religious traditions.

Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The presents article provides an exemplification of how to apply a computer-assisted method to analyze metadata in order to detect patterns and make informed, purposive selections in scholarly analysis of large sets of YouTube videos. The case chosen is that of YouTube channels which previous research has identified as being part of contemporary Salafi activism in Sweden. Using a recent survey of such activism (Ranstorp et al. 2018) as both a starting point and a contrast, the article applies computer-assisted methods of analysis on metadata for 6905 videos published on 13 Swedish YouTube channels, and shows how the application of such methods can be a useful first step in scholarly inquiry into a material that is at the same time rich in information relevant to the Study of Religions, and, due to its size, difficult to assess in full.

Abstract [en]

Abstract [en]

This article utilizes a cognitive science of religion framework in approaching the cultural phenomena of relics from the prophet Muhammad in Islamic tradition. The basic arguments are that a contagion aspiration system that underlies the phenomenon of relics in general could hypothetically be construed as an evolutionary exaptation of a contagion avoidance system within a framework of social learning, and that the specific phenomenon of relics can be seen as a by-product of this exaptation. This explanatory model is used to make sense of two specific complexes of beliefs and practices: (1) the notion that physical contact with prophetic relics results in transfer substance, baraka, with this-worldly beneficial effect, and (2) the fact that prophetic relics throughout history has been used by political and religious dignitaries as a means to boost social prestige and authority.
