Abstract [en]

The writing down of a miracle tale was a meeting point between the oral culture of the lay people and the literate, Latin culture of the clergy. The question is to know to what degree the extant manuscripts give a trustworthy documentation of this meeting. Examples from the miracula of four Swedish saints, Eric of Uppsala, Birgitta of Sweden, Bishop Nils Hermansson of Linköping and Katherine of Vadstena, are scrutinized in this paper, in order to come as close as possible to the original storytelling moment.

Miracle tales are marvellous sources – not only because they deal with miracles. In them, we come closer than in almost any other category of sources to what was medieval daily life. We meet with ordinary people who are otherwise not mentioned in any surviving sources, and share in their worries, their sufferings, their joys, and not least in their faith.

But how trustworthy are the accounts? May we hear in them the authentic vox populi, the voice of the people? The answer given in this paper is that this is the case, more or less, since the registrars, who were proficiently bilingual, knew that the tales could be subject to renewed inquiries, but that they have filtered the stories to some extent, and especially the wording of the vows and other theologically sensitive issues.

Abstract [en]

Indulgence – a frequently misunderstood phenomenon in the medieval Church.

This paper has a didactic purpose. An often heard misconception concerning the medieval Catholic Church is that forgiving of sins could be bought for money. This opinion is the result of misconceptions of the phenomenon of indulgence. In the paper, indulgence is discussed and explained in the context of the sacrament of Penance. Examples are cited from late medieval Scandinavia. The focus is on practice, while theological and judicial aspects are dealt with cursorily. Martin Luther’s critical discussion of indulgence in his 95 theses from 1517 exemplifies the critique directed towards the late medieval sale of indulgence. Finally, some modern Swedish schoolbooks in Religion and History are examined in order to see if misconceptions of medieval indulgence are still in vigour.

Abstract [en]

Impressions from Belarus

From April 12 through 19, 2015, I visited Belarus. My host was Belarusian State University in Minsk, where I had numerous conversations with colleagues and students. The article confers general impressions of the city of Minsk and its architecture, as well as from several museums and the National Library. Cultural influences in prehistoric and historic times are dealt with, and some linguistic observations are made. The concept of the Great Patriotic War is discussed, departing from a visit to the homonymous museum, and conversations with students. The article also confers impressions from a visit to the historic town of Grodno near the borders of Lithuania and Poland, where, among other sites, a visit was paid to the old Bridgettine convent. In the final part of the article, the border separating Belarus from its Schengen neighbours is discussed.

Abstract [en]

Ann-Mari Borgelin has edited the memoirs of her father, who commanded the Danish voluntary corps in the Estonian and Latvian wars of independence 1919. Captain Richard Gustav Borgelin was a talented writer who not only gives precious information on the operations, but who also presents the reader with interiors from homes of peasants and officers, and recounts numerous interesting conversations with people he met during the campaigns. He likewise met some Swedish volunteers to Estonia, most notably Georg Malmberg, who was the commander of an armoured train.

Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

By focusing the prayer life of medieval peasant communities, Viktor Aldrin has chosen an original theme for his PhD thesis. Few medieval catechetic handbooks or other religious writs deal explicitly with members of the peasant community. More rewarding are miracle collections of various saints, in which it is not unusual to come across peasant men and women, who pray with their own words, with no clergyman present. Prayers were learnt by imitating other praying people, for example godparents, and by participating in liturgy.

Abstract [en]

Medieval Miracle Tales Related to GotlandMiracle collections and canonization processes from the Swedish Middle Ages contain some 600 accounts of people having experienced help after imploring the saints for intercession. This number includes miracles related to a miracle-working image of the Descent from the Cross in Stockholm. Only a small number of Swedish miracle tales have some connection with Gotland. This might be explained by the central position of the island in the network of trade and communication routes of the time. Gotlanders had a large choice of shrines around the Baltic Sea rim and on the continent, and there were also pilgrimage sites on Gotland itself. In a world where doctors were few and the results of their treatment dubious, where crossing the Baltic was a risky enterprise, and the legal rights of the individual precarious, the saints offered a sense of security and a belief that help was never far away. The Middle Ages may feel distant, but in the history of mankind, only a brief moment of time separates us from the people who lived in that period.
