Abstract [en]

There are many situations in society and life in which the body is expected to play an important role for the acquisition of particular skills. This article reports on a study of such a situation, namely when information about first aid and how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CRP) is mediated to nonmedical professionals. The aim of the article is to tease out how different modes of informing feature in first aid and CPR classes for the lay public in order to transform participants in such classes into CPR-trained lay rescuers ready to intervene in cases of what is suspected to be cardiac arrests. The understanding of the role of the body in information-related activities is based on a practice-theoretical approach. How information figures in the practice of first aid and CPR training is also discussed in light of Foucault's notions of biopolitics and self-technologies. The practice-theoretical approach illuminates how bodies are entwined in information activities, and the notions of biopolitics and self-technology illuminate how the practice of bystander CPR training instantiates control through the different kinds of informing activities that occur in classes. This study is based on material gathered through observations in bystander CPR classes.

Abstract [sv]

Biblioteks- och informationsvetenskaplig forskning har visat hur infrastruk-turer och data inte är neutrala utan bidrar till att forma både det som de re-presenterar och sammanhangen där de används. Vi utgår från dessa insik-ter och diskuterar i artikeln en nyhetsrapportering från november 2015 som handlade om en eventuell förändring av abortgränsen i Sverige. Registerda-ta från Svenskt Neonatalt kvalitetsregister, ett av över 80 svenska nationella kvalitetsregister – där data om behandlingar, patienter och sjukdomar sam-las i syfte att förbättra kvaliteten inom vården – visar sig vara betydelsefulla för nyheten. Vi belyser hur infrastrukturer och specifika data kan förstås som relationella och inta olika innebörder eller roller i olika sammanhang, i detta specifika fall, sammanhang som handlar om såväl neonatalvård som abort. Konsekvenserna av förståelserna rör här liv och död.

Abstract [en]

Library and information studies research has shown how infrastructures and data are, contrary to common perceptions, not neutral but take part in sha- ping what they represent and the contexts in which they are used. Starting off from these insights we discuss Swedish media reports from November 2015 about a possible alteration of the abortion limit due to recent findings in neonatal care and research. Register data from the Swedish Neonatal qua- lity register figured in the background to the media reports. In this article we discuss how specific data and infrastructures can be understood as relational and hold different roles and meanings in different circumstances. The circum- stances in this case are both neonatal care and abortion. The significances of the data consequently concern life as well as death.

Abstract [en]

The study inquires into how a specific piece of standardised information, namely the standard for bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), is configured in the practices of lifesaving and bystander CPR-training. Standardisation is commonly thought of as leading to uniformity and order, while practices are dynamic. They evolve and change through repeated enactments. The aim of this thesis is to explore what happens in the meeting of these two apparently conflicting phenomena, practices and standards. The study’s analytical framework is primarily based on theories of practice, previous studies of standards and a foucauldian governmentality perspective. In order to attain the aim the CPR standard is followed ethnographically and a few specific incidents of its enactment are examined in detail. The material the study is based on has been compiled by observing bystander CPR classes, interviews with participants in CPR training and documents from some of the central actors involved in this practice which develop, update and distribute guidelines. The study demonstrates how the standard in the pursuits of making CPR an intervention to be carried out by the lay public is linked to and associated with technologies, hopes and aspirations. As these diverse elements are connected to each other, additional configurations of lifesaving and resuscitation than that delineated by the standard appear. The ways in which information features and informing happens in these pursuits are diverse and shown to have implications for the shaping of a particular kind of subjects, lay rescuers. This study consequently raises questions about how standardised information is configured in practices and how diverse ways in which informing happens in practice are associated with different forms of governance.

Introduction. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in ethnographic research within the field of library and Information studies. Although ethnography has been used by information researchers for studying a wide variety of phenomena, discussions concerning methodological developments and directions, as well as ethnography’s wider applicability within the field are rare. Our intent is to contribute to the such discussions.

Method. The article draws on three on-going research projects to illustrate how the analytical and methodological concepts of following and translation are operationalized.

Analysis. Particularly the article addresses the tension between the site specificity traditionally associated with ethnographic methodology, and the fluidity and place transcending but yet situated character of the objects of study in the field.

Conclusion. The authors conclude that an ethnography of following and translation is a tool for handling the movability characterizing the phenomena studied in the field, thus turning the necessary uncertainty of inductive research into an advantage. This allows the researcher to stay open and let the object of study lead the way.

Abstract [en]

There appears to be an increasing interest within library and information studies (LIS) in so-called indigenous or traditional knowledge. Discussions on usefulness and applicability of indigenous knowledge in development seem to be motivating electronic documentation and the creation of databases. Often, definitions provided by international organisations are drawn on unquestioningly, while power structures embedded in descriptions provided by such organisations are ignored. This article aims at drawing attention to the ways in which international organisations define and talk about indigenous knowledge in relation to development. This is achieved by critical, close reading of six publications issued between 1998 and 2008 by the following organisations: WIPO, UNESCO, ICSU, UNDP, the World Bank, and IFLA. The critical reflections are also intended to shed light on how documentation practises can be understood as extensions of power. For this the authors draw on Foucauldian notions of power and discourse as well as on post-development and postcolonial perspectives. Relationships and discursive procedures for statements on science, development discourse and intellectual property rights, are shown to be influential in the creation of the concept indigenous knowledge. Relating indigenous knowledge to post-colonial and post-development studies reveals how indigenous knowledge is created and kept marginalized within the discursive structure of development. The analysis concludes by showing how knowledge named indigenous knowledge is trapped and created in a circular flow which legitimises international aid organizations, development discourse and the intellectual property rights system. The article concludes by demanding greater awareness among LIS researchers and practitioners regarding the culturally embedded character of knowledge practices and of the power of classifying and defining.

Projektets syfte var att undersöka vilka möjligheter forskare i Norden inom områdenahumaniora och rättsvetenskap har till open access-publicering och parallellpublicering.Projektet fokuserade på nordiska utgivares inställning till och diskussioner kring openaccess (OA) och parallellpublicering. Utgivare av tidskrifter, monografier, antologieroch festskrifter inkluderades och identifierades utifrån publikationer registrerade påforskare inom rättsvetenskap och delar av humanistiska fakulteten åren 2004-2008 i detöppna arkivet Lund University Publications (LUP). 52 av 123 tidskrifter och 56 av 175utgivare besvarade varsin webbenkät. Fler tidskrifter än väntat tillgängliggör artiklarfritt på Internet, 15 stycken. Många uttrycker en vilja att sprida forskningen men det äroklart hur stor medvetenheten är om nyanserna i fritt tillgängliggörande utan kostnadoch fritt tillgängliggörande med få juridiska, ekonomiska och tekniska begränsningar,gratis respektive libre. Endast ett par tidskrifter framställer sig som libre. Möjligheternatill OA parallellpublicering är stora och här framförs viljan att synliggöra ochtillgängliggöra forskningen och den egna tidskriften. En intressant iakttagelse är attmånga tidskriftsutgivare inte skriver kontrakt om upphovsrätt med sina författare. Detjuridiska läget är oklart men författaren bör då behålla stora delar av sin upphovsrättvilket skapar möjligheter för parallellpublicering.

Inte någon av de utgivare av monografier, antologier, årsböcker etc. som besvaradeenkäten kan betraktas som vare sig libre eller gratis, däremot förekommer fritttillgängliggörande som smakprov och marknadsföring. Farhågor för minskadförsäljning genom fritt tillgängliggörande är tydligare bland utgivare än tidskrifter.Många utgivare anger att möjligheterna till parallellpublicering kan finnas men manuttrycker också farhågor om minskad försäljning. En slutsats är därför att det är meningatt fråga utgivarna om lov att parallellpublicera sin text.

En övergripande slutsats är att open access och fritt tillgängliggörande är ovana begreppsom inte är helt självklara att förstå. Verksamma inom publicering och finansieringmåste därför göras medvetna om och själva klargöra vad som avses och eftersträvas närman talar om att forskning ska vara OA. Om inte skillnaderna klargörs finns risk för attdet bildas en gråzon där man tror att fritt tillgängligt utan kostnad är lika med libre. Enannan slutsats är att då forskare i stor utsträckning väljer att publicera sin forskning iböcker bör motiven för detta liksom publiceringsmarkanden utredas närmare för attbättre förstå förutsättningarna för fritt tillgängliggörande. Om enbart tidskrifter ställs ifokus kommer en stor del av publiceringen att förbises.

Abstract [en]

This article deals with the possibilities for Open Access (OA) publishing for Nordic researchers in law and in the humanities. Fifty-two journal editors answered a survey with questions on publishing in OA journals and on parallel publishing. The results show that the number of journals with a clear OA policy is low though a number of journals make articles freely available on the Internet without such a policy. The need to discuss the concept of OA in its relation to gratis, “available without cost” as opposed to libre, “available without cost and free of most judicial restraints”, becomes visible in the study. This is necessary, not least when considering research funders’ demand for OA. Many journals are positive towards parallel publishing. However, for many journals there has never been a need to draft a policy due to a lack of demand from authors. The journals consider parallel publishing as a means to communicate research and to publicize the journal. The investigation also shows that written author contracts are rare. This means that copyright stays with the author, which would provide possibilities for parallel publishing.
