Abstract [en]

The aim of this article is to analyze the discrepancies between certain aspects of living conditions of ethnic Danes and immigrants in Copenhagen. Copenhagen is quite prosperous and fares well in the globalized economy but is at the same time experiencing increasing poverty and ethnic segregation. Differences in income have increased spatial segregation in Copenhagen in terms of housing and education. This segregation is most visible in relation to highly educated Danes and immigrants from non-Western countries. The article first examines poverty at household level and its spatial dimensions. Secondly, it considers other living conditions (for example social networks). Thirdly, it explores immigrants’ experiences of, among other things, education, employment and citizenship. It concludes that social cohesion in Copenhagen may be threatened if this segregation continues.

Abstract [fr]

Abstract [pt]

Abstract [en]

The welfare state can be regarded as ‘an expression of institutionalized solidarity’ (Stjernø 2004: 338). Indeed, institutionalized solidarity has been ascribed to the Nordic welfare states, whose origin and maturation have been strongly associated with Social Democratic ideology (Esping-Andersen 1990). Yet, recent decades have seen reforms that have made observers wonder if some of the Nordic countries are departing from the Social Democratic model. This chapter, using Denmark as a case, aims to discuss to what extent the handling of new social risks incorporated into social policy complies with the political ideology of liberalism.

Abstract [en]

The growing marginalisation from the labour market has in most European countries been answered by activation policies. However, societal inclusion can take many other forms than labour market inclusion and also the employment effects of most activation policies are often meagre. The article therefore points to other and more radical policies than activation.
