Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The focus for this article is child poverty in a Nordic welfare state context. With data from two qualitative studies from Sweden and Norway, we discuss child poverty from the children’s point of view, in the framework of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, articles 27 and 28. In article 27, food, housing and clothing are mentioned as particularly important for an adequate standard of living. In poverty studies where children’s voices are being heard there has been little focus on these necessities. We find that a few of the children living with economic hardship experience a lack of necessities such as food, housing and clothing. We also explore whether children experience limited possibilities in relation to education. Despite of the state policies recognition of equal opportunities in relation to schooling, we find differences due to economy. In some cases this leads to young people dropping out of school to work. Overall we find that children take responsibility in relation to their families’ financial situation. In the final discussion we pay attention to the powerlessness of the children’s situation between the parents and the states’ responsibilities for providing for the children’s basic needs. We argue for the need for a discussion about the children’s position between rights and protection. If poor children are loaded with more responsibilities than their peers from better-off families, it will add to the burden of worry and distress in an already complicated situation.

Abstract [en]

This thesis is about the every day life of children who suffer from economic hardship. The aim is, from the children's point of view, to create an understanding of the consequences that economic hardship has on their relationships with their parents and other children. A further aim is to gain an understanding of how children act in relation to the families' economic situation and how they experience their every day life and general living conditions. Parents have also been interviewed about the families' general living conditions and the interaction between children and parents in relation to the economic situation.

The empirical data has been collected over a period of fourteen months. Fourteen children aged 7-19 years and eight parents in seven families have been interviewed on five occasions. A total of 44 interviews have been conducted. The theoretical foundation of the thesis is childhood sociology, symbolic interactionism and social identity.

The conclusions of this thesis can be summarized in two major results. The first is that economic hardship is of importance in the relationship with other children and in the interaction between children and their parents. The children's possibilities of participating together with peers through possessions and activities are affected to a varying extent depending on the circumstances. The relationship with their parents is also affected by children having to take economic responsibility and by children cooperating with them. Economic hardship also causes a strain on the relationship. The second major result is that children are active in forming theirs and their families' every day life in relation to the economic limits. On the basis of their understanding and their definition of the situation they choose different strategies, the aims of which are either to live within the limitations of the situation, so-called reactive strategies, or to change their own situation and sometimes also the situation of their household. These are defined as proactive strategies in the thesis.

Abstract [en]

This report focuses on child poverty from the child’s perspective. The results spring from a study that had two overall aims. The first was an overview of national and international literature where children in poor families have been interviewed. The second was to explore suitable ways and methods of reaching and meeting with children in poor families. The report contains two parts, each aim is addressed in each part.

In the first part, the literature overview, the results indicate that children irrespective of nationality, experience similar consequences of living in poverty. The economic situation leads, more or less, to social and material deprivation and a consciousness of the situation. The results show that the main effect is that poverty reduces children’s possibilities to live a socially active life with family, friends and in school. The results also indicate that children, irrespective of nationality, experience the situation differently depending on various factors, for example family relations, coping strategies, age, social network and structural differences between countries.

In the second part, testing ways of contact and methods, the results indicate that the best ways of reaching children in poor families is through gatekeepers who have a familiar and trusting relation to their parents. The results also show that the use of various methods gives a broad and complete understanding of children’s own experiences of living in poverty. However, meeting the children only once, which was the case in the study, does not give a deep understanding of the complexities of their every day lives. Studies that follow children over a longer period of time are needed for that purpose.

An English summary is included in the report.
