Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate user perceptions of Point-of-Sale (POS) systems among small retailers in the town of Kalmar, in southeastern Sweden. Through placing itself within the interpretative research tradition, the empirics of this research is based on qualitative interviews with seven small retailers. The findings from the interviews were then analyzed to evaluate user perceptions regarding POS systems.

The findings suggest that small retailers perceive POS systems differently depending on their requirements and the information, system and service quality of their system. This thesis challenges previous conceptions that POS systems offer retailers only operational benefits. Furthermore, it provides a theoretical contribution in that it argues that small retailers can gain tactical and strategic benefits from the deployment of POS systems, however the achievement of such benefits is intrinsically linked to effective use, the retailers current and future requirements, and the capabilities of their POS systems.
