Abstract [en]

The understanding of the continuous changes impacted by digitalization in urban spaces is important for the users since they are co-creators of technology. Users have to understand their importance and the potential value of creating technology according to their needs since their decisions and behaviour affect the way in which technology is adopted. This can be exemplified in the case of smart cities, urban spaces where information technology is combined with everyday objects. So, how to present the information about the smart city in a meaningful way for the inhabitants so that they can understand it and be motivated to engage? The literature review focused on the inclusion of citizens, public visualisation, smart city models and ethics and privacy concerns. Empirical research (case study) consisted of the interviews which have been conducted with the locals of the smart city District S in Stockholm regarding perception of own efforts, knowledge and information receiving on the topic of smart city in their urban space. Results showed that although locals are mostly interested in gaining knowledge and mostly positive regarding own role in the smart city in which they live, the information and visibility is often lacking. Respondents wanted clear guidance on what the smart city is and how to be included, preferably from reliable sources. Having these insights in mind, public displays came out as the possible solution for presenting information on smart city in District S. My study demonstrated that in order to participate, inhabitants have to gain knowledge and understanding on the topic relevant for their environment, as well as to perceive their role as valuable not only on the local, but societal level.
