This study is a case study that has the purpose of investigating the Swedish political

party the Liberals and their ideological standpoint. The party has historically had

more of a classical liberal approach to their politics but then become more social

liberal throughout the years. Therefor an analytical framework has been created to

compare the Liberals political program with the classical liberal ideology as well as

the social liberal ideology. The analytical framework is divided into four ideal types

where the two ideologies clearly have divided views. The ideal types are therefor

state, economical system, freedom and responsibility and were inspired by a

comparison made by Andrew Heywood in his book Political Ideologies. In the

analysis the study shows that the Liberals have more in common with the social

liberal ideology when it comes to their views on state and welfare as well as

freedom and responsibility. However the study found that the Liberals share the

views of the classic liberal ideology when it comes to economical system. Hence

this study can conclude that the Liberals are more in likeness with the social liberal

ideology but have tendencies to classical liberalism in some political views.
