Abstract [en]

The thesis explores how the democratic rule has been in Turkey during 2010-2014, with special regard to how the rule of the Justice Development Party (JDP) has affected the country. It provides the reader with an overview of the political situation in Turkey, as well as how much the country fits in to the notion of being a Polyarchical society. Findings on the subject has produced an outcome that indicates on negative aspects of the latter. Even though Turkey is a democracy on paper, many factors indicates on the rule of something else - factors pointing towards an authoritarian rule in disguise (arguably). Violations of human rights and civic freedom have been factors under constant threat in Turkey, throughout the years of which the JDP has been in power, and it will be further examined during the depicted time-span of the thesis as well. One of the most eye-catching issues that are occurring in Turkey is the rise of Populism and the negative impact it has brought upon its population and political system. Internal segregation, as well as internal conflicts, have been a parts of the politics that has tortured the democratic freedom of civilians within the country. Though the question still remains if Turkey is a reliable democracy that can be accounted for on the international as well as their national arena, or if the JDP are creating setbacks for the prosperity of its own development.
