This paper examines how narratological elements can create excitement and suspense, using examples from two mystery novels for children, which build up suspense in a variety of ways. Aspects such as micro- and macro-suspense, outer and inner suspense, and clues and secrets create tension and desire to read on. The essay concludes with a dicussion of the findings in relation to foreign language teaching.
