Abstract [en]
Translating culture-specific items such as proper names (William the Conqueror, Mouse Trap Tree) and cultural references (roller derby, rumspringa) pose many problems for translators. This is because their inherent foreignness has to be made coherent and relatable for a new cultural audience. This study sets out to investigate how a pragmatic approach to such culture-specific items in a translated text can aid in making them comprehensible to the target reader, and to examine which translation strategies are applied in order to achieve this and to what extent. This is achieved by identifying said culture-specific items in a 10-page excerpt from an English language text and counting the strategies used. The results show that a pragmatic approach resulted in translation strategies that tended to favor ‘domestication’ strategies, which are strategies that render the foreign nature of these culture-specific items into more familiar terms for the reader in the target culture.
