The aim of the study was to understand the Swedish Social Insurance Agency's rejection decisions for individuals with mental illness from a power perspective through a qualitative text analysis of legal documents. The study examines how the Swedish Social Insurance Agency justifies its rejection decisions for individuals who have applied for sickness benefit for mental illness and also which tools are applied in the exercise of power. Furthermore, the authors have immersed themselves in the cases of the individuals behind the figures in the statistics in relation to the managing authority. Expressions of power were found between the social insurance officer and the insured and this was evident in the study. Something among other things that the authors found in the assessments is how the Swedish Social Insurance Agency's own rules sometimes seem to create ambiguity and uncertainty.
