Abstract

With this paper, the author is trying to show the importance of practical tasks in theoretical engineering courses. There are several results from pedagogical research supporting the importance of practical training for learning and understanding. The interest of young people in engineering education is declining from year to year and it is very important to make changes in teaching/pedagogic to make the subject more attractive and interesting. Most of the young people do not have any idea about the engineers’ daily work and their tasks; the engineers are an anonymous group in the society of today. It is also important to build in some visible references in the mind of the fresh students to help them to understand the following courses in a program, because the students of today are different from students of yesterday. Therefore it is very important to accomplish many and different practical laboratories and projects in the early courses of a program. It is also necessary to show the link between the theory and reality.

The author has applied various theoretical-practical projects in the first course of Mechanical Engineering at Växjö University. The course is placed in the first semester of the program and taught along with the mathematics courses.
