Abstract [en]

An 11th C. bishop and missionary to northern Sweden—including the territories of the Sami—named Stenphi and renamed Simeon, was reused under a third name, Staffan (Lat.: Stephanus), in a 15th C. chronicle. Here, he was casted as a martyr and a grave was identified. Paradoxically, Simeon's posthumous career as a martyr was given additional strength by the Reformation, when exiled Catholics fought to reclaim the history of Christianity in Sweden. The alleged martyr lived on in literature, tradition and folklore and still does so.
