The purpose of this study was to examine how foster home parents view their life as a foster home. Because it was a general question regarding the subject own view the study was conducted under the inspiration of grounded theory (Glaser & Strauss, 2008). Three interviews were recorded, transcribed, coded and analysed using constant comparative analysis. The constant comparative analysis resulted in five categories; lifestyle as a prerequisite, isolation, understanding, the love for the children and transfer of custody. The three properties that emerged were resources, commitment and calling. A hypotheses was formed. No theory emerged through analysis.

The study concludes with some correlations emerging: the foster parents personal resources and commitment to the foster children, seems to allow them to withstand severe conflicts concerning their practice as a foster home for the children without the foster parents choosing to resign. A reason for this seems to be that they are worried that no one else can guarantee the best interests of the child, the reason for the foster parents believing this seems to be due to the lack of good communication between the foster parents and the social services. All of the families had good experiences with social services but chose too focus on the negative experiences in the interviews.
