Perhaps no athlete better symbolized the struggle against tyranny, poverty and racial bigotry : Attitudes about ethnicity true the use of history in the movie Race (English)
Abstract [en]

This study purpose is to examine the attitudes about ethnicity by the use of history in the movie Race. The movie is about track and field star Jesse Owens who wins four gold medals in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The method used in this study is a discourse analysis. I will use a deconstruction method to break down the discourse to analyse it deeper. The result that this method produced is that the film does not break free from the current discourse about afro-americans in historical sport films. The film puts Jesses coach, Larry Snyder and his training in the front seat and not Jesse Owens. Snyder becomes a prerequisite for Jesse to succeed. Jesse however is made an American hero for standing up to Nazi Germany. Therefore, Jesse embraces the collective American identity despite the racism he is has to endure every day in his own homeland.
