Abstract [en]

The use of the visual picture is becoming more and more audacious when it comes to external communication. Within the company or the organisation though, the conscious and strategic usage is still faint extended. The aim with this study is to investigate the function of the picture in internal communication in an organisation or a company. This is a qualitative and exploratory study which aims to investigate a relatively new area within the field of media and communication and management. Therefore I use a deductive approach and I have explored existing theories considering visual communication and internal communication. Subsequently I have compared these with the result of my own investigation. The result indicated that pictures are frequently and consciously used in staff magazines. Staff magazines as a communication channel has developed and their function is completely different today. According to the communication consultants though, the usage if the visual picture is not very well investigated in internal communication. The changing role of the staff magazine, in combination with the fact that internal and external communication more and more overlap, makes the function of the visual picture in internal communication more important today than before. The changed way of handling and study organizational communication has made the production of communication material to an external matter, a fact that also might affect the usage of visual pictures.
