Abstract [sv]

Abstract

Title: Relationship between demands, resources and exhaustion - A study of nurses' work environment in health centre.

Background: Sick leave related to stress in health care increases and has consequences both for the individual, the organization as well as the society. Work-related stress arises when there is an imbalance between job demands and job resources.

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to investigate the experienced demands and resources at work and the prevalence of exhaustion among nurses working at health care centers, as well as to investigate the association between demands, resources and exhaustion.

Method: A quantitative cross-sectional study with hypothetical-deductive approach was conducted. Data was collected through a web survey, conducted in a county in southern Sweden at 21 health centers, 120 nurses and district nurses participated. The response rate was 66%.

Result: Associations were found between high demands at work and exhaustion, as well as between inadequate resources at work and exhaustion. There was also an association between high demands and low resources at work. More than a fifth of the nurses have symptoms of exhaustion, which were primarily related to sleep problems and irritation/anger.

Conclusion: The majority of the nurses experienced that they had a good/very good health. Just over a fifth had symptoms of exhaustion mainly related to sleep and irritation/anger. Negative associasions exist between demands and resources, which may indicate an imbalance between demands and resources at work. Associations with exhaustion were insufficient resources and incompatible demands, as well as tasks that go against personal values. Preventive interventions may be important to prevent the development of stress-related symptoms. The majority experienced good support of their immediate boss. Social support is one of the most important resources and can have a buffering effect on demands.
