Abstract [en]

In this paper we draw from Foucault, particularly his writingson the technologies of self, to problematize and reimagineunderstandings of what it means to coach effectively andethically. In recognising the difficulty of operationalisingFoucauldian ideas, we provide a narrative-of-self to revealhow an elite tennis coach, Göran Gerdin, adopted Foucauldianideas in a process of ethical self-creation. The narrative revealshow Göran experienced the tragedy of youth player suicideand how he critically reflected on his coaching role in relationto this tragedy. Through specifically problematizing theinsidious influence of technologies of dominance on athleticsubjectivity, Göran reveals how he drew from Foucault todevelop alternative coach practices and a related telos. Weconclude by reflecting on pragmatic issues associated withcoaching with Foucault.
