Abstract [en]

Press freedom is an important part of a developing country today. The need for information and objective news is a brick stone for a stable democracy. Guyana is a developing country situated in the South America. The country is struggling with both ethnical problems and a high rate of criminality. Guyana provides two independent newspapers, the Kaieteur News and the Starbroek News. When we conducted this research our objective was to investigate which role the free newspapers have in Guyana, the responsibilities they have, and the level of free speech in the newspapers. We have based our empirical data upon qualitative interviews with prominent persons from Guyana’s media community. We have also done a participant observation and a content analysis. Our research pointed in the direction that there are numerous factors that can threaten press freedom in a developing country. We encountered several cases where the government violated press freedom. But the main threat is the organized criminality that has infected the entire society. We have also seen that it is very important to have educated journalists in the newspapers, so they can provide the society with fair and objective news. This is important both for the development of the democracy and also for the education of the citizens in Guyana.
