The impact of bluelight filtering contact lens on visual functions. (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to evaluate if blue-light filtering contact lens has any impact on visual acuity, contrast sensitivity and colour perception and if the findings are different from a normal tinted contact lens.

Twenty nine emmetropic subjects without any ocular health problems were included in the study. Each subject tested two types of contact lenses, one was a conventional contact lens with a normal handling tint, and the other was a blue-light filtering lens with a yellow tint. Visual functions such as visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, colour vision were evaluated without any lenses and then with these two contact lenses. The visual function measurments were done with the Metropsis system (Cambridge Research System) and the results were analyzed with repeated measures ANOVA. The visual function tests was performed binocularly in a dark room.

Visual acuity showed no significant difference between the three conditions. There was a slight reduction of visual acuity with the blue-light filtering contact lens but this difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.181). The contrast sensitivity function across five different spatial frequencys were similar in both normal tinted and blue light filtering contact lenses. However, the unaided contrast sensitivity was significantly better than the contrast sensitivity obtained with the two contact lenses (p<0.05). Colour vision showed no significant difference between these two lenses (p=0.117).

This study showed that the blue-light filtering contact lens did not have any effect on visual functions such as visual acuity, contast sensitivity and colour vision. The visual functions for the blue-light filtering contact lens were similar to the normal tinted contact lens. The blue-light filtering contact lens can be used as an alternative to the normal tinted contact lens if they have an added benefit of protecting the eye from the blue-light.
