Mental illness among elderly and social involvement : A quantitative study on mental illness and Sense of Coherence (English)
Abstract [en]

The number of elderly people in Sweden is growing and mental health in this group has been highlighted more in recent years. Previous studies have shown that there are deficiencies in how mental illness is identified and investigated for this group. This study undertakes the perspective of Antonovsky’s sense of coherence, SOC, which has been shown to be closely correlated with health, and how it is affected by the level of social involvement. In this study, the degree of SOC among the elderly who were active in pensioners’ associations was compared with the elderly who were not active in pensioners' associations and needed home care services to manage everyday life. The study showed that there was a statistically significant difference in the perceived sense of coherence between the groups, where those who were active in pensioners’ associations had the higher degree of SOC. This suggests that an active social commitment after retirement can counter mental illness and promote perceived sense of coherence.
