The Nordic Sense of Exploitation
Linnaeus University, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Department of Film and Literature.
2019 (English)In: Society for Cinema and Media Studies Conference, SCMS 2019: Sheraton Grand Seattle, March 13–17, Norman, OK: Society for Cinema and Media Studies , 2019Conference paper, Oral presentation only (Refereed)
Abstract [en]

The focus on my short introduction will be on the specific Nordic sense of exploitation during the 80s, which differ quit a lot from its American counterpart. Nordic exploitation could be conceptualized as filmmaking aimed against normative ideas of what constituted “film art” (financially and culturally supported by the Nordic Film Institutes), but also aimed against the prevailing notion of unlawful film violence for the sake of entertainment. This will be exemplified by Swedish film factotum and outcast, Mats Helge Olsson, who managed a virtual film factory in the countryside outside of Lidköping, far from the fashionable film center in Stockholm.
