Abstract [pt]

Abstract [en]

This article aims to study the Nordic Model of welfare state and the lessons learned from it. Firstly we show the major characteristics of the Nordic Model that can be summarized in three master statements: stateness, universalism, and equality. After that we study the conditions and circumstances in which the Nordic Model emerged and became flourishing in the four decades following World War II. Then we show the challenges faced by the Scandinavian countries from the 1990s, related to changing class and demographic structure, socio-political forces, ideological discourses, as well as European integration, globalization, neo-liberal financialization and international migration. We show that, although the Scandinavian countries have made necessary changes, they have succeeded to maintain their welfare states that combine low social and economic inequality, gender equality and comprehensive welfare systems with very satisfactory economic growth characterized by dynamism and innovativeness.
