Abstract [en]

This paper investigates the relationship between names of hun- dreds, village names correlating with hundred names, and places of assembly. Usually it is assumed that many of the hundreds were given names from names of villages where the assemblies of the hundreds were held. However, when the matter is studied more carefully, taking landscape, field names, and historical and archaeological sources into consideration, another picture is visible: It seems that there are very specialplaces in landscape, archaic and mythic ones, presumably placesof assembly, which in their landscape setting and mythic status as well as by their names link legal activity of the hundreds to a remote prehistoric past. It is likely that the names of these places are the origin of both the hundred names and correlating names of villages in the vicinity. A case study is presented, about Harjager hundred in south-west Scania), Stora and Lilla Harrie villages, and Harthaker ‘ hard field’. The results could support the view that names of archaic places in landscape, rather than correlating village names, are the onomastic origin of the hundred names. But the picture is complex and from this case alone other interpretations are possible as well.
