Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to find out if there is any point to do a wider study of how homophobic hate crimes are described in Swedish media. We also wanted to find out how much attention these crimes are given in the Swedish press in comparison with other ideologically motivated crimes; in this study we compared with honour related crimes. We used a quantitative analysis and counted the amount of articles that where written within a certain period of time about murders with a homophobic or an honour related motif, respectively. The results show a dramatic difference. The honour related crimes were given far more attention than the homophobic hate crimes. To find out how the homophobic hate crimes were described we used discourse analysis. The analysis show that reports about homophobic hate crimes in some respects differs from what is generally known about journalism on crimes in the Swedish press. The journalism on homophobic murders is careful in the description of the perpetrator, the victim and the motives for the crime. As we know from earlier research, this is not the case in media coverage of honour related crimes.
