Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Amniotomy is one of the most common interventions during labour and are often done to speed up the delivery. There are complications due to amniotomy, for the mother and child, for example umbilical cord prolapse. Although it is a common intervention during labour there is not much research done regarding women’s experience. By getting knowledge about how women experience amniotomy, midwives can meet women and perform the amniotomy in the best way for a good childbirth experience. Aim: To describe women’s experiences of undergoing amniotomy. Method: The study is qualitative. Ten women were interviewed, separately. The women were chosen through comfort selection. The material was analyzed with a qualitative content analysis. Results: Some of the women experienced increased pain and lack of control after the amniotomy due to a more intense progress of labour. Some women did not think the amniotomy was a big part of the childbirth experience. They felt relieved and safe during the intervention and that gave them a positive experience of the amniotomy. Conclusion: It is of great importance that the midwife informs and prepares the women about and for the amniotomy and the effect for the women to feel that that they have control. The midwife needs to be present after the intervention due to the increased progress. Beside the support the midwife should offer a more effective pain relief if needed.
