It is love and care that unites us : A qualitative literature study of emotionally neglected children and secondary attachment figures (English)
Abstract [en]

Child neglect has been given relatively little attention in research and development of the  society´s support. Emotional neglect basically means that the child does not get its need for love satisfied by their caregiver. The purpose of this study was to examine the participation of secondary attachment figures in the attachment process of emotionally neglected children, to gain an understanding of how society can support these children. This study is based on qualitative content analysis of six autobiographies, which provided the opportunity to see and understand adults’ descriptions of a childhood characterized by emotional neglect. In the analysis of the autobiographies, the attachment theory has been applied as a theoretical tool to understand the attachment process of emotionally neglected children. The results of this study shows that the emotional neglect can occur through passive or dismissive behavior of primary caregivers. This can further lead to development of internal working models in the child and adaptation of its attachment behavior. This study suggests that secondary attachment figures that show courage and perseverance along with emotional care, such as love, closeness and affirmation, have proven to be of great importance to emotionally neglected children. Furthermore, this study implies that secondary attachment figures in this way may help the child to gain insight into its emotional neglect, because of a new perspective of emotional care. They might also move the child forward in life and may be involved in restructuring their internal working models.

We argue that this study´s results are something that professionals who work with children need to keep in mind, to be able to help and support emotionally neglected children. This applies to the way they can approach and treat these children, in order to contribute to their development regarding internal working models and their attachment process.
