Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to make an inventory of impacts that tourism and the environment has on each other. This is examined from a number of tourist producers perspective but also from a local tourist experts perspective. The study has been carried out with the help of a deductive approach based on previous studies about Arctic tourism and the environment. To collect empirical data four semi-structured web-based interviews were carried out with respondents who works and one who have worked with tourism and environmental issues. Based on the result of the study the conclussion is that there are two clear environmental impacts on tourism and two clear impacts of tourism on the environment. Partly it has been pointed out that cruise tourism entails some negative environmental impact, and that there has been a growth in tourism on Svalbard which has has positive environmental impacts. It has also been pointed out that weather characteristics may adversely affect tourists activities, and that reduced sea ice as a result of global climate change has led to an extended cruise season on Svalbard.
