In this essay I will be researching the effect the American public have on the political decisions that are made regarding the federal gun laws in the country. The US is a well known democracy, but there might be other wills and interests that intervene with the opinions of the people. The theoretical framework of the essay is from author C. Wright Mills (1959) which in his book The Power Elite describes how the country is secretly run by powerful individuals, and not the people. The main issue of the essay is the question: What impact do the American people have on the political decisions regarding the federal gun laws of the country? The method used is a case study. Using a series of bills that were introduced in the last decade I will compare and analyse different variables, to see to what extent the public affects the politics. Only bills introduced in the last decade within the area of gun legislation was used. I found out that the American politicians more likely than not have an intention of representing the will of the people, but that the outcome of their efforts is severely lacking.
