This study examined through an online experiment how pre-election polls affect voters. The results revealed that votes for the most popular optionin creased on average by 7% when polls were shared with participants, shifting away from both minority options and options with intermediate popularity. This bandwagon effect was consistent across different electoral systems and different political issues. In the experiment, participants voted on the distribution of $1,200 between politically active organisations. This experiment is unique in that it offered a highly controlled environment to study voting and examined voting options that are relevant to participants because of real-world political consequences.
