May I Ever be Accepted as A Female? : A qualitative study on the experience of gender dysphoria with a focus on transition (English)
Abstract [en]

This study aims to create an understanding of transition from men to women based on private stories. The methodological approach used has been qualitative research with semi-structured interviews. Four individuals contributed to the study by sharing their experiences of gender dysphoria. The empirical material of the study is analyzed by the help of Ebaugh's theory of the “process of role exit’’ and complemented with West and Zimmerman's theoretical perspective of "doing gender" as well as Goffman’s dramaturgical perspective of stigma. The analysis shows that transition may not look alike in the sense that there are no clear steps which are followed by each individual. Transition may vary in relation to different types of medical treatments and different medical investigations besides variations in gender attributes such as clothing and makeup. It was apparent that our informants felt that their thoughts and feelings did not match with their bodily attributes at a younger age. This ambivalence led to a long process of confusion which became most apparent as a teenager. The results of the study showed that both medical care and supporting environment were necessary for smooth transition. The stigma that persons faced by others could impede the process. Whereas support received from significant others gave persons psychic strength to continue the transition. Yet, not to be accepted as a “full female” despite the transition seemed to be a distortion factor of the transition.
