Prerequisites from a holistic perspective : A qualitative interview study on the ability of school curators to work preventively with unaccompanied young people's mental illness (English)
Abstract [en]

Mental illness is one of the biggest health problems among unaccompanied young people upon arrival in Sweden. The consequences of mental ill-health in unaccompanied youth can be devastating for the individual and the society. For this reason, it is important that the children and young people who come to Sweden with traumatic experiences receive the early help they need to be able to integrate into society and create a good life as possible. The school curators, which this study focuses on, is the psychosocial expert i “student health services”, whose task is to work preventively so that problems such as mental ill-health should not arise or be exacerbated in order for students to achieve the goals of the education. The purpose of this study was to create a better understanding of how school curators at senior high schools in Sweden work preventively about the mental ill-health of unaccompanied youth. We have used semi-structured interviews, which is a qualitative research method where we interviewed six different school curators with different work experience on the subject. The conclusion of this study is that the school curators' prerequisites for preventive work with unaccompanied young people's mental health vary. Insufficient time and resources limit the preventive work, while cooperation and expertise within the organization create better conditions. At the same time, there is a need for increased knowledge about mental ill-health among unaccompanied young people within the school, both in staff and among students.
