Premodern fighters : Physical conflicts during the 16th century (English)
Abstract [en]

This essay examines violent conflicts in Stockholm during the 1500s by using protocols from courtrooms as the main source. The study is partially quantitative and partially qualitative. The quantitative part of the study examines what places the violence took place in, what reasons behind the violence were presented in the court, and which part of the social hierarchy the people using violence came from. The qualitative part of the study goes in depth on a few select cases to provide a better insight in what actually happened when a conflict took place. The results of the study shows that the home was the most common place to have a physical conflict. It also shows that servants and other people from the lower parts of the social hierarchy was more prone to using violence. This part of the study also shows that people from different parts the social hierarchy fought eachother in about a third of the cases, servants were overrepresented in this part of the study aswell. When it comes to the reasons behind the violence, there were two categories that had the most cases. These two reasons were theft and defamation with theft being slightly more common.
