Abstract [en]

Although they are often cast in an unfavourable light, caravans, RVs and mobile homes constitute an important element of second homes. However, the extent of research on mobile second homes is nowhere near as great as that done on permanent homes. The chapter identifies the main themes in the literature and notes the relationship between the perceived social and material qualities of mobile homes (by those with permanent homes) and how this has often framed negative perceptions of caravans and mobile homes. Nevertheless, the literature also notes that mobility has connotations of freedom and is an important contributor to self-identity as well as, in the American context, national identity. In addition, feelings of community also remain extremely important. Aging populations and the search for improved quality of life are regarded as significant drivers of second homes and the mobile home is regarded as an important lens through which to view the life course mobility of both individuals and the material in the understanding of home.
