To be your own narrator : A narrative analysis of the representation of black people in See You Yesterday. (English)
Abstract [en]
Historically black people have been underrepresented in film both as actors and working behind the screen. It has been shown that when represented in film black people are depicted in a distorted way that reinforces negative stereotypes. This portrayal has been the result of many years of the film industry being predominantly white. The aim of this study was therefore to examine how a black filmmaker would choose to portray black people in their story. This study analyzed how the narrative in film represents black people and whether this portrayal maintains or challenges existing stereotypes. The material analyzed in this study consisted of the sci-fi movie See You Yesterday (2019), written and directed by Stefon Bristol. Through narrative analysis and the theoretical framework of representation, othering, and stereotypes, we found that the film challenged stereotypes and common narratives. With this essay, we’re hoping to broaden the knowledge and understanding of how black people are represented in film, and how this is constructed when black people are controlling the art and therefore deciding their narrative.
