An interview study of how primary schools work with suicide prevention and against stigmatization of mental illness among men (English)
Abstract [en]

According to statistics, males are vastly overrepresented in the suicide statistics in the majority of western societies. A common belief among scientists is that males are less likely to seek professional help regarding mental health as a result of stigma. While there is stigma in having mental illness in itself, males that deviate from socially constructed gender norms face even more of it. By exhibiting signs of weakness, being emotional or asking for the help of others, males put their role as a masculine male at risk. Since these male norms begin to assimilate during childhood it is important to intervene at a very young age, considering it’s much harder to break established norms once males have reached their teenage years or even adulthood. This bachelor's thesis aims to interpret and gain an understanding of how compulsory school counselors interprets and reflects about their respective school’s suicide prevention programme and their work against stigmatization of mental illness among males. Our findings show that the schools primarily focus on problems that are evident among their students, as a result of resource shortage and lack of established guidelines to emanate from. This means that suicideprevention and reduction of stigmatization regarding mental illness among males often gets overlooked by compulsory schools
