A womans honour lies between her legs : A qualitative study of honour-related violence and oppression and the way out of it (English)
Abstract [en]
The purpose of the study is to examine stories of honor-relatedviolence and oppression from the affected women's ownperspective, in order to gain in-depth knowledge of thebreaking-up processes related to honour-related violence andoppression. The following questions to be answered are: how isthe honor-related violence and oppression described by thewomen? What factors have been described as enabling andcomplicating in the breaking-up process? How can the women’sstories be interpreted in relation to the maintenance of honorrelated violence and oppression? The study is based on aqualitative analysis of five autobiographies written by womenwho have been subjected to honour-related violence andoppression. In this study we have used the theories of genderpower order and the process of role exit.In the results of the study we contributed to make it viable thatHolmberg and Enanders (2011) theory of the breaking-upprocess isn’t adapted nor designed to be applicable in anhonour-related context. We have come to the conclusion thathonour-related violence and oppression is a complex subjectand therefore difficult to define which can be seen in previousresearch and studies.
