Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to, with the help of the ideal types marxism and liberalism, examine the similarities and differences between the Moderates' and the Social Democrats' aid policy between 2007 and 2018.

Two questions are used to contribute to achieving the purpose of the study.

The questions are thus:

- Based on the ideal types marxism and liberalism, what are the main similarities and differences between a Social Democratic and a Moderates' aid policy in Sweden between 2007 and 2018?

- Based on Potrafke & Brech's theory, are there clear ideological contradictions between a Social Democratic and a Moderate development aid policy in Sweden between 2007 and 2018?

The Social Democrats and the Moderates in government have certain differences regarding development assistance policy between 2007 and 2018. The differences are greater in economic policy areas than in value-driven areas. No area between the Social Democrats and the Moderates is clear enough to be marked in red and imply significant differences. Of the study's total of eight themes, three areas are marked in yellow, which means differences but only of minor importance for the whole. The remaining, a total of five themes, have only or mostly similarities. Differences between the Social Democrats and the Moderates can be found in matters of public opinion, such as the one percent target, autonomy of the recipient country and the importance of regular evaluation. The study has not examined in opinion strategy differences, only differences in policy.
