Abstract [en]
It is a political goal that no child should grow up in a financially unstableenvironment in Sweden. The goal is regulated in the 1 § in chapter 4 of theSocial Services Act, and states that anyone who cannot provide forthemselves are entitled to financial assistance for his or her livelihood.Through financial assistance the individual must be ensured a reasonablestandard of living. The aim of the study is to understand how social workersperceive child poverty in families applying for financial assistance and howthey work to ensure that children achieve a reasonable standard of living.Data for the study has been collected through interviews. The respondents’answers have shown various conclusions. It has emerged that it is difficultfor social workers to ensure children a reasonable standard of living even ifthey have laws and guidelines to comply with. It is difficult to go beyondthose frameworks, even if they have room for maneuver to make their ownassessments. Lastly it has emerged that social workers experience thatchildren often feel ashamed of growing up in financial vulnerability becausethey compare themselves with other children who have better financialconditions.
