Abstract [en]

The subject of email is something interesting to study and is today a centralapplication for most people in the working place. The usage of email hasgrown tremendously over last decades and have brough a lot of positiveimpact on the communication among people within organizations. Thepurpose of this study is to understand how email usage in an organizationaffects the efficiency and effectiveness of an employee. This thesis hasconsidered email as main topic with focus on efficiency and effectiveness forthe worker. A theoretical study has been conducted on the definitions ofefficiency and effectiveness. This thesis has then decided upon definitionsthat will be considered for the analysis in this study. An empirical study hasbeen conducted within the scope of the thesis to be able to answer the finalresearch question. Email could affect both the effectiveness and theefficiency of a worker, both negatively and positively. This depending onhow email is used by the worker, but also that things can be comparedrelatively to different conditions. The result from this study was showing thatemail can increase the effectiveness through better quality output, multipurpose function, simplification, less interruptions, and sending message toseveral people simultaneously. Downsides was also mentioned such as lesseffectiveness through low quality emails that affects the worker and nonvalue-added time. When it comes to improved efficiency, it could comethrough for instance increased productivity, flexibility, better control,sending message to many people simultaneously, and improved qualityoutput. On the other hand, inefficiencies could also be created through lowquality emails, interruptions, and less available working time. This study hasexplained how efficiency and effectiveness for a worker is affected by email.
