Nonprofit organizations are today an important part of Swedish society withseveral hundreds of thousand people engaged in these organizations. Formalleaders have responsibility for the functioning of these non-profit organizations. The purpose of this study is to describe and increase the knowledge aboutformal leaders' behavior and management of running these nonprofitorganizations. The study is based on a qualitative method which hascross-sectional study as a research design. The empirical data was collectedthrough semi structured interviews with leaders from seven differentnonprofit-sports organizations. This study conducts an inductive approachthrough the entire essay. The study's problem formulation was formed as below:

How can the leadership behavior of formal leaders in non-profit sportsorganizations be described and understood?

The answers from the empirical research have been compared to earlierleadership models and theories. The result has also been compared to previousstudies within the area of nonprofit leadership and leaders. The result from thestudy shows that nonprofit leaders' behavior tends to be a variation between ademocratic and servant leadership. Leaders often motivate, delegate, communicate and reward in their management style. These types of behaviorsand characteristics of a democratic leader style, but used to have a more servanttype of relationship with the followers and members in a sports organization.
