Discontinuation of the Eksjö garrison city.  : A study of discontinuation of large operations and its impacts. (English)
Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper was to investigate how a city is affected when one of the city's largest employers discontinues its operations. The discontinuation of one of Försvarsmaktens’s operations in Eksjö has formed the basis for the purpose of the study. The questions answered in the study are: how did Eksjö become a military city, how are cities affected by the military's presence and how are cities affected when a large business is discontinued. To answer these questions, both qualitative and quantitative methods have been used. To answer the study's question, texts and books have been read and analyzed and figures/data have also been compiled. The result showed that military activities have been conducted since the mid-1400s, since then areas around Eksjö city have conducted military activities. After the analysis of Eksjö's master planning, it emerged that Eksjö considers Försvarsmakten and its areas in its future planning and is therefore affected by the military's presence. Finally, it was also shown, after compiling the population and unemployment during the years of decommissioning, that Eksjö's population decreased in connection with decommissioning and that unemployment decreased.
