Pedagogical methods of the preschool library : How a cooperation between preschools and the public library can affect the activities of the preschool library (English)
Abstract [en]
This bachelor thesis covers the pedagogic methods used at preschool libraries and how they are affected by cooperating with the public library. The primary focus of the essay has been to point toward the positive aspects of this cooperation. Four preschool teachers, one preschool principal and one librarian have been interviewed. The chosen theory of the essay has been the Circle of Reading by Aidan Chambers. This has been used to cover different pedagogical methods such as conversations about literature, discussions about books as a concept, discussing images, reading out loud, and allowing the children to search through books. Through assessing the empirical evidence provided by those interviewed, supported by relevant research, the author has reached the conclusion that the preschool library is more than simply a room or designated area. Its activities are ideally meant to influence the pedagogical work at the preschool itself. The public library and preschool can affect each other in positive ways through the preschool library, one example being familiarising children with library concepts and habits. Through working together with the public library, known for its interest-based reading, the promotion of a desire to read is safeguarded. This would enable preschool teachers to make executive decisions about the preschool library’s features, construction, and pedagogic goals.
