Holoportation: a qualitative study on the NextGen communication channel

Abstract [en]

Purpose: The objectives of this thesis was to examine and discuss the existing interpersonal communication and the impact it has when utilising current technology to communicate remotely. Once the situation was studied, it was possible to analyse the perception and usability of NextGen communication, specifically holoportation, which can have in five different industries.

Approach: Data was collected through structured interviews with professionals of the five chosen industries (education, IT, logistics, marketing, sales/advertising). All interviews were recorded via audio and notes with the consent of the research participants. Once interviews were concluded, they were transcribed for analysis. The qualitative method was utilised to collect rich information in an efficient manner. The foundation of the research was based on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT). The literature review is conducted using the existing literature to find out the insights of intercommunication in the above- mentioned industry. Relevant literature was searched and selected on the basis of its relevance to our research.

Empirical findings: For the research, a total of fifteen participants were interviewed. The sample size did not restrict a certain number of participants from each area. The outcome of the interviews was analysed based on the following categories aligned with the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) framework utilised - Communication channels in use and issues; Effectiveness of digital communication channels; Impact of technology shift on communication channels; Usability of holoportation technology.

Limitation: This study had some limitations since time was restrained reducing the possibility for extended research of the topic. As a result, the study was not able to have a deeper analysis and understanding of the impact, perceived value and usability of NextGen communication - holoportation - in more industries. Due to the unavailability of holoportation products in the market, it was a little difficult to study the impact via usability of technology, due to that the study is conducted to find the impact only via perseverance.

Conclusion and Future Research: This study demonstrated that technology has impacted the way interpersonal communication is done in different industries and their preferences. As a result of the conducted research, it was possible to conclude that the NextGen communication, holoportation, will be beneficial for the different industries analysed. In our research communication channels were analysed from an individual perspective, for future research analysis can be carried out across industries to have a holistic view of communication for industry and its dependent industry.

Value: This study identifies interpersonal communication and the impact of current digital technologies on such relationships. In addition, it analyses the possibility of new technologies and their perception in regard to communication.
