Rhetoric in the Spanish and Finnish political discourse : Comparative study of rhetorical resources in the newspapers El País and Helsingin Sanomat. (Spanish)
Abstract [en]

The intention of this study is to explore what kind of rhetoric is used inpolitical discourse in Spanish and Finnish newspaper publications. The studycompares the uses of rhetorical devices in these two languages. The focuslies on exploring the frequency of metaphors, comparisons, rhetoricalquestions and exaggerated expressions. In addition, the characteristics foundwithin the elements are recognised from a cultural perspective. As a methodthe investigation uses rhetorical comparison. The materials are in total tenargumentative texts written by politicians for the Spanish newspaper El Paísand the Finnish Helsingin Sanomat. The style of political language is basedon the use of argumentation. Therefore, the discourse includes a variety ofrhetorical devices. The analysis focuses on finding which rhetorical devicesare most common in each language, as well as explaining the difference ofuses through the cultural characteristics. It is assumed that exaggeration andquestioning is more usual in the Spanish texts, while figurative expressionsare more frequent in the Finnish ones. As expected in the hypothesis, thegreatest differences appear in the use of metaphors and exaggeration.Rhetorical questions are generally more common in Spanish, butcomparisons are found to be few in both languages. Besides, the results bringup the diverse styles in which these rhetorical elements are being usedrepresenting the characteristics of the cultures.
