“You feel quite powerless many times” : A qualitative study of social services‘ work with mothers who have been abused by their male partner (English)
Abstract [en]
The prevalence of partner violence has increased over time. Even though this is the case, there is not much research on violence against abused mothers. Therefore, there is interest in this study to look at and understand how social workers in Sweden may face difficulties while working with moms who have experienced violence. The goal of this study is to investigate and raise awareness of potential challenges faced by social workers while assisting moms who have been exposed to violence. Eight qualitative semi-structured interviews with social secretaries who deal with violence in close relationships served as the study's theoretical foundation. Its theoretical framework is Michael Lipsky's concept of discretion. The conclusion of the study illustrated how difficult and intricate the work may be for social secretaries, whose responsibilities include supporting and assisting adult moms who have been subjected to abuse. The analysis and results showed that the work with abused mothers is like solving a puzzle, with one perspective centered on the wants and expectations of the mothers. While the treatment of abused mothers is the focus of the opposing viewpoint. There are inquiries, interpretations, opportunities for action, municipal judgments, and organizational adjustments.
